Volunteer Befriender
Let’s tackle domestic abuse and sexual violence together across the South West.
Our volunteer befrienders offer 1:1 support to people who have experienced domestic abuse or sexual harm. This support is part of our recovery programs and is offered to people who are now considered low-risk but are still struggling with the trauma of their experiences and the continuing impact on their lives.
Main responsibilities:
• Provide 1:1 listening and emotional support.
• Support and promote empowerment and recovery.
• Encourage independence.
• Adhere to best practices and policies, including safeguarding and raising concerns regarding risk.
• Commit to offering weekly support for 4 months (time off for holidays/personal commitments is okay).
• Provide support by phone.
You can deliver this role remotely. While the role requires some time flexibility, on average, volunteers spend 2 hours a week per support session. Supporting more than one person at a time will require more hours.
Training and support:
FearFree will provide induction training and appropriate training for the role. This role offers the opportunity to develop skills and make an incredible difference to the people we support. Volunteers receive full support.
We may ask volunteers to attend training events and meetings, which sometimes occur in the evening. Additionally, volunteers must commit to regular supervision sessions.
This is an exciting time to join our leading domestic abuse and sexual violence charity. We can provide references after three months of active volunteering.
Person Specification:
• Passionate about supporting the work of our organisation (essential).
• Good communication skills (essential).
• Empathy for individuals who have experienced domestic abuse.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills (essential).
• Strong boundaries (essential).
• Commitment to developing skills through training.
• Proactivity, energy, and enthusiasm (essential).
By participating, you’ll gain invaluable experience and contribute to a cause that transforms lives. Join us and make a difference today.
